How to Survive Jet Lag

Jetting off to a far-off destination can be extremely exhilarating; but at the same time, your circadian rhythms are thrown for a loop. Jet lag, also called “time zone tiredness,” is a trademark condition that can wind up leaving you exhausted and unable to enjoy your holiday completely. So how do you keep your sleep/wake cycle balanced? Keep reading to learn what mistakes you could be making and how to survive jet lag:
This is essential: if you have a morning ritual, stick to it. This means that the day after your arrival, you should get up at your normal time, do that 7-minute workout, get showered, eat breakfast, or whatever it is you do. Don’t succumb to the temptation of sleeping in until noontime and causing internal chaos. The same applies to your travels. If you’re on a plane when you’d be working, do work, for example.
Depending on where you’re headed and how long your flight is, you might want to rethink your customary aisle seat. The aisle seat can be problematic when you’re trying to get some shut-eye, as people will want to get past you to use the bathroom. For those who want to sleep and be left undisturbed, always choose the window seat. Not only can you prop yourself up against the wall, but you won’t get jostled as regularly. Nor will stewards attempt to rouse you when it’s snack time.
A lot of people get wound up before the day they fly, meaning you don’t get any sleep the night before. However, this sudden change in your normal routine can actually worsen the effect of jet lag—because you’re going into this whole experience messed up. By staying relaxed and getting a decent amount of sleep before you travel will help your internal clock stay balanced.
As tempting as it might be to bury your face in the hotel pillow upon check-in, endure it. Stay awake for as long as possible on the day your arrive, and try to ensure you arrive early enough at your destination to enjoy some time walking around and unwinding. Then, go to bed around your normal bed time—unless that’s utterly impossible, then shoot for 22:00. The time you wake up the next day is also important. Don’t sleep in too long, because again, you’re throwing off your circadian rhythm.
As tempting as it might be to suck down a Starbucks venti before your flight or to sip some coffee with your in-flight meal, don’t. Again, this is all about maintaining your natural rhythm. If you wind up drinking coffee at 21:00, mid-flight, when you’d usually be brushing your teeth, you’re sending dozens of mixed signals to your brain...and this will inevitably worsen your jet lag. The same can happen with alcohol. Drink wisely.
Here’s the bottom line: if you want to beat jet lag before it begins, you’re going to have to be prepared for it. Travelling is guaranteed to exhaust you, but you should do your best to maintain your day-to-day activities and scheduling as much as possible. As long as you stay well-rested and relaxed, jet lag can be mitigated or avoided altogether.
